Environment is the place that we are living and growing. What should we do if our environment becomes unusual? Such as hot condition, flood everywhere, or erratic weather. This is what people called climate change. The important things are: first we must be adaptable to facing this situation and second is do our real actions to minimize the effect of climate change.

Nowadays the climate in our planet is’nt in good condition. We felt comfort inside because of air conditioning room, but there were so uncomfortable outside. The world is getting warmer, pollution covered our planet. Carbon monoxide in the air, factory waste on the water, and the garbage dominated the soil. Do you still feel comfortable to stay in this planet? With the garbage around you, and pollution entered your nose, envenom your lung, and kill you softly? Your lungs, which should be in charge exchange carbon dioxide from the blood with oxygen from the air, did not even get oxygen, because of the dirty air that you breathe every day

All people around the world seems so busy to give a little attention to our planet, we just do our daily life normally without knowing how the world condition now. The most important things are our job finished, our needs meted, and we still stay alive. Economic importance is win. Besides that, I really don’t care! So, what is the world need teenager’s action?It means our real action to changing the world to the better world? What should we do? It’s not easy and not too hard to do, it just need our participation. It’s not important to talk about how much our participation, but how to make our participation much meaningful!

Why don’t people care? Because they think their life is still good and there is nothing happens to them, they can live peacefully and normally. But they make the earth worst day to day, without they feel about it. If adult people are getting hard to give just a little attention to our earth, come on guys this is our chance to show the world that it still has a wide awake youth that can make a world better changing. But unluckily there is still less young people who ‘wide awake’ to our earth. If the adult people and young people are not really care to the earth, be ready to see the world ruination one day. Start looking for another place to live like Mars or maybe moon.

Climate change is a serious environmental issue today. Climate change is a long-term change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods of time that range from decades to millions of years. It may be a change in the average weather conditions or a change in the distribution of weather events with respect to an average, for example, greater or fewer extreme weather events. Climate change may be limited to a specific region, or may occur across the whole Earth. We should adapt to facing climate change.We, as an industrial society, have become far too familiar with terms like smog, radon, lead, asbestos, ozone, and carbon monoxide. We have also seen on the news, read in the newspaper, or experienced in our own lives some of the harmful consequences that result from these pollutants -- perhaps as allergies or congestion from exposure to smog or more dangerous carbon monoxide poisoning. Regulations have been established in an attempt to minimize these harmful air pollutants. For example, we have vehicle emissions testing and standards for pollutant emitting facilities. But, using vehicle is one of global warming factor too, because vehicle produces pollutant. Imagine that if one vehicle produces kilogram gases of pollutant, how many pollutant that produce by 1000 vehicles a day, a month, and a year? Whereas the example is only 1000 vehicles. In fact there were so many vehicles used by people. Such as car, motorcycle, factory vehicle, agriculture vehicle, and still a lot of kind of vehicle used.

We are the main factor of global warming causes. We produce rubbish every day. We and rubbish are can’t be separated.Do you ever throw away the rubbish not in the trash bin? Do you know where will the rubbish go? For example, you first throw away a candy wrapper on the street and then other people with candy wrappers see you and think that’s it’s no big deal since you did the same thing anyway. And then imagine the pile of the candy wrappers is getting higher and higher and causes flood. Flood hampered the economic activities such as buying and selling, product distribution, and also hampered your activity like go to school. We can’t study comfortably if there much flood water inside our class. If the comfort class like now is using makes you lazy to pay attention to the teacher, how will the flooded class make you?Flood makesbig disaster that brings a lot of disadvantage to us, it will creepier if it is start from the small thing like candy wrappers.

And after it all happens, pollutant in the air, rubbish everywhere, and sleepy human around us. Should we make a change? Will our activity make an influence to make our environment better? Don’t think about it, the more you think about it, the more world getting worst. Because world still need human, to caring, loving, and saving. We are not only day dreaming and talking, we are doing, we are acting, and we are participating. We are young, and we still need the place to grow, to study, to dream, to get success, and to make people around us happy. And the place is here, we called it earth.

Young generation had the biggest part of this mission, to changing the world, to make solution how to facing or minimizing the global climate change. Do you ever heard about T R A N S F O R M E N T? Transforment is not as simple as a movie title, but it has amazing mission inside the name that should we teenagers do, Transforment is Teenager’s Action for Environment. Our planet needs us, we are human, and we had a billion of ide to minimize and adapt with the effect global change climate.

We stay on the same planet, the same atmosphere, and the same air. But we had different activity that lestmake us all different at all. Come on the world needs us, young Generation with youth spirit. So what can I do? Where and when I should do it? The answer is simplest things that you can do by yourself. And do it now!

What are the simplest things that we can do it our self?

1. Do not charge your mobile overnight. Leaving it on the charger for over 8 hours is a waste of power, when most of the cellphones batteries get charged up in just a couple of hours or less.
2. Use eco-friendly recycled bags instead of plastic ones that are a threat to life
3. A glass bottle thrown away into a landfill today will take almost 100 years to disintegrate. How about another kind of rubbish? I think it wills same or unless it will make the environment dirty and finally can cause flood. Think before you use!
4. Do not leave appliances on standby
   Use the "on/off" function on the machine itself. A TV set that's switched on for 3 hours a day (the average time Europeans spend watching TV) and in standby mode during the remaining 21 hours uses about 40% of its energy in standby mode.
5. Take a shower instead of a bath
   A shower takes up to four times less energy than a bath. To maximize the energy saving, avoid power showers and use low-flow showerheads, which are cheap and provide the same comfort.

You can do the step by yourself and ask another people or your friend to join and do the same thing as you. Simple things can make a big change if a lot of people participate. By the way, do you ever heard about “World Walking Day” or “Car Free Day”? As we know, our government have had make the concept and practice it. Every Sunday, Dago Street is close for car or motor vehicle. Many people walked there to jogging or family time. It used to minimizing the pollution in the air, although is only held for only 3 hours, yes 3 hours without vehicle in one street. But I think why it just takes 3 hours and only in Dago? Why doesn’t the government make a car free day along Sunday? Not only in Dago but also from Merdeka street to Dago? If the reason is because it will kill the economic activity along the street because there are so many malls there, I think the consumer or people who want to go to mall can walk or cycling and government provide a cycling rent near Merdeka Street or Dago Street and it cooperate with cycle rental. Before it, the government should inform people in city and out of city that car or vehicle are not allowed to enter Merdeka until Dago Street only for Sunday. So the consumer will not bring their vehicle or car, they can cycle from home or use public transportation. It will minimize the pollution drastically. But it all need our help and big participation.

Do you still using vehicle to go to school? Although you have knew that vehicle produce carbon monoxide that polluted our air? If our destination is near, why still we us the vehicle? Cycle is better than vehicle; at least it isn’t produce carbon monoxide and pollution. Beside that it will make us healthy. Our government provides is a good facility to do it, such as make a blue street beside the main street, it is use for cycling. But we can see that still less people use the facility. Some drivers use it to make their driving faster and against the traffic jam. Cycling can burn the fat on your body and of course minimizing pollution in the air. You can adapt to the global climate change and minimize the effect of global climate change. You are teenagers, and you still need the world. Place where you grow, dream, learn, get success, loving, caring, and make people around you happy. Come on, show your real action!

MEMBACA, MENJADI COLUMBUS MASA KINI

Columbus dilahirkan di Genoa, Italia, pada 1451. Tatkala berangkat dewasa, dia menjadi nahkoda kapal dan navigator. Ia pernah membujuk Ratu Isabella I untuk menyediakan anggaran demi memudahkannya melakukan ekspedisi ke Asia Timur.

Columbus adalah sang penjelajah dunia. Terbukti ia telah mengarungi berbagai negara dan menemukan Benua Amerika pada sekitar abad ke-15. Mungkin kita berpikir pada era globalisasi di saat harga barang melonjak naik dan minimnya perekonomian rakyat semacam ini menandakan betapa mustahilnya kita bisa berkeliling dunia seperti Columbus. Nyatanya, siapa saja bisa berkeliling dunia secara gratis, tanpa kapal, tanpa pesawat, bahkan lebih cepat ketimbang apa yang dilakukan Columbus. Yang harus kita lakukan hanyalah satu, yakni membaca.

Dalam Kamus Bahasa Indonesia, membaca berasal dari kata ‘baca’ yang berarti memahami arti tulisan. Ibarat sebuah pisau, maka membaca adalah tindakan mengasah otak agar tidak tumpul dimakan waktu. Membaca merupakan kegiatan yang positif karena kita bisa menambah wawasan serta mengembangkan daya imajinasi. Membaca lebih dari sekadar mempersiapkan mata dan memperhatikan tulisan saja, melainkan adalah sarana untuk berkeliling dunia secara gratis. Sebab kita bisa mengetahui segala hal yang terjadi di dunia tanpa harus keliling dunia. Membaca tak harus selalu berkaitan dengan buku pelajaran. Memahami arti tulisan yang tertera pada sastra, internet bahkan hingga Al-Quran juga bisa diartikan membaca.

Sungguh ironis. Banyak orang yang setuju dengan pepatah, “buku adalah jendela dunia”. Namun realitanya, perhatian generasi muda masa kini terhadap minat baca tergolong rendah. Terbukti Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) pada 2006 menyatakan bahwa masyarakat kita belum menjadikan kegiatan membaca sebagai sumber utama mendapatkan informasi. Orang lebih memilih menonton TV (85,9%) dan mendengarkan radio (40,3%) ketimbang membaca koran (23,5%) (www.bps.go.id). Sementara UNESCO pada 2005 menyatakan bahwa mahasiswa di negara maju memiliki rata-rata membaca selama delapan jam per hari. Sedangkan di Indonesia hanya dua jam per hari. Belum lagi laporan Human Development Report 2008/2009 yang dikeluarkan UNDP menyatakan bahwa minat membaca Indonesia berada di peringkat 96 dari negara di seluruh dunia, sejajar dengan Bahrain, Malta dan Suriname. Miris sekali bukan?

Sebaliknya, pola hidup remaja masa kini malah kurang memberikan manfaat, seperti hang out misalnya yang cukup diminati. Sebenarnya Columbus pun demikian, ia juga suka hang out. Bedanya, hang out yang dilakukan Columbus tidak sekadar ‘mencuci mata’ saja, tetapi bernilai positif. Terbukti perjalanannya dalam menjelajahi dunia banyak menginspirasi dan memberikan manfaat bagi orang lain. Sama halnya dengan membaca, maka itulah hang out yang positif. Sebab hanya bermodalkan bahan bacaan dan mata saja, kita sudah bisa berkeliling dunia secara gratis sehingga kita bisa menjadi orang berguna, baik bagi diri sendiri maupun orang lain.

Menurut saya, akar dari permasalahan ini adalah kesadaran. Tidak mungkin seseorang menggemari suatu hal tanpa adanya kesadaran dan kemauan dari manusia itu sendiri. Misalnya, seseorang menyukai matematika karena ia sadar betapa pentingnya matematika dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Dalam hal bisnis, dalam hal arsitektur bahkan dalam hal astronomi sekalipun pasti dibutuhkan matematika. Sama halnya dengan membaca. Maka jika kita ingin meningkatkan angka minat baca, yang harus kita lakukan adalah membangun kesadaran masyarakat, terutama dari diri sendiri terlebih dahulu. Alangkah ruginya kita jika selama belasan tahun mempelajari A-I-U-E-O, ba-bi-bu-be-bo bahkan hingga ‘ini Budi, ini Ibu Budi’ tetapi kita tidak menyadari betapa pentingnya budaya membaca dalam kehidupan sehari-hari.

Membaca bukanlah suatu pemaksaan mata, melainkan suatu kesenangan tersendiri. Jangan anggap sebagai suatu beban, tetapi anggaplah itu sebagai makanan yang lezat. Setiap kali kita membaca, maka setiap kali pulalah kita merasakan aroma yang nikmat. Resapilah rasanya yang manis, asem, asin dan pedas yang bercampur menjadi satu yang secara perlahan-lahan merasuki hidungmu. Cicipilah apa yang kamu baca lalu pahamilah artinya. Dengan begitu niscaya membaca tidak lagi menjadi ‘momok’ yang menjemukan, melainkan sebagai fantasi yang mengasyikkan.

Masa-masa remaja adalah masa-masa pencarian jati diri. Mereka cenderung mengikuti tren dan apa yang banyak diminati. Belakangan tren harajuku tenar di kalangan anak muda Indonesia. Jadi, andaikan kita berhasil mempengaruhi para remaja untuk gemar membaca, dengan membentuk suatu komunitas misalnya, tak mustahil kita bisa menjawab permasalahan ini.

Di samping itu keluarga juga turut berperan penting. Dalam buku Make Everything Well, khusus bab “Menciptakan Keluarga Sukses” (2005), Mustofa W. Hasyim menganjurkan agar tiap keluarga memiliki perpustakaan keluarga. Kalaupun tidak bisa, minimal orangtua mentradisikan budaya membaca kepada anak-anaknya sehingga akan tumbuh rasa cinta mereka terhadap membaca. Bayangkan, apa jadinya jika seluruh keluarga di negeri ini gemar membaca?

Pemerintah juga selayaknya melakukan pengadaan buku gratis, memberdayakan perpustakaan-perpustakaan dan meningkatkan sarana dan prasarana pendidikan. Dengan demikian pemerintah tak hanya menyelesaikan PR-nya demi memberantas kebodohan tetapi juga menggiring bangsa ini menuju komunitas berbasis kultur.

Kiranya itulah solusi-solusi yang dapat saya kemukakan. Mungkin terdengar sepele, namun akan berarti besar jika kita mau mulai melakukannya. Saya tak dapat membayangkan bagaimana jadinya jika semua generasi penerus bangsa mencintai kegiatan membaca. Namun yang terpenting, saya selaku penulis akan puas karena ada Columbus-Columbus masa kini yang akan berkeliling dunia secara gratis.*
